I'm finally back.

Late march, I spilled a glass of Cola on my laptop. I spent time after that on a replacement laptop with an integrated graphics card that couldn't handle tremulous...

But now, I finally have a new laptop, with a switchable setup.

Here's some specs:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5670 is far better than this graphic card. Anyway notebook has limited power so it's just waste of cash.

Er, one thing: a graphics card is a dedicated card which you plug into a motherboard. Built-in graphics hardware != graphics card. And Intel, for one, don't do graphics cards: it's always on the motherboard…

Faulty logic there. You're forgetting the portability, which more than offsets that. I could equally well say that a desktop computer uses more electricity so it's just a waste of cash…

Something for you to try: next time you're out somewhere, take a desktop computer, monitor etc. with you and try to use it. In a pub, on a bus, or outside… doesn't matter too much where. If you can manage that without any problems then yes, I'll agree, for you something more portable and designed for portability is a waste of money. :P

lol desktop on a bus. now that's on my top ten things to see list.

lol i can't stop laughing and yes i think computers are a waste of money. weather it being a laptop, desktop, or kindle. all of them waste almost the same amount of enegry at the end of the year.

and the more it gets smaller the more it gets money wise. for example check out the phones we have now. the guy who invented the moblie phone only thought of telephoning someone not to become a mini computer of itself.

i sirsly think the world is being over run by computers.

What are you complaining about? You can buy small netbookish keyboards for desktop boxes. :)

Not sure about that last bit. Laptops use quite a bit less: desktop boxes can be a bit power-hungry, particularly CPU & GPU, and external monitors tend to use more than laptop display panels.

And ebook readers – different display technology. AIUI, power is only used there when changing the display content, and the rest of the hw is low-power too…

As for waste of money – depends…

Was always going to happen: marketing ("Be a good little consumer. You need this. Buy it." "Meh. Yes. Meh.") and we've got better at doing more with less power.

(Mine? Small QWERTY keyboard, more than a phone, but still significantly less than a tablet computer. I suppose that a good test is whether you can run Tremulous on it…)

The computers disagree. They say that it's overrun by humans.
