$ man tar
$ tar --help | less |
That said, “tar xf $TARBALL” is enough. It'll detect the compression method automatically. Then again, create a directory, enter that directory then unpack – that way, you'll not accidentally overwrite anything.
If you want to check what's in the tarball, “tar tf $TARBALL | less”.
… And if you expect double-click to extract, then either something is missing from your installation or you really do want Windows. Then again, not automatically extracting requires that you think about it a bit – fails safe, if you will.

BTW, why is everywhere this and similar: "tar -zxvf file.tar.gz" (http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/unpacking-or-uncompressing-gz-files/) and not “tar xf $TARBALL” whose will solve all compression?
I am not windows fanatic, linux is good for you, kaotaja and other experts. Or for "dedicated" users (only for websurfing, videos and music). But not for common people or bfu.
